- How do data brokers get my information?
- Most of it comes from public records (voter rolls, property deeds, court filings, business filings), plus data you gave to loyalty programs, warranty cards, sweepstakes, apps, and websites that resold it. Brokers then buy and merge these sources into a single profile keyed to your name, address, and phone number.
- How long do removals take?
- It varies by site. Some people-search sites remove listings within 24–72 hours. Others take 4–6 weeks, and a few will drag it out unless you follow up in writing or by phone. Marketing brokers like Acxiom or Epsilon can take 30–45 days to process a suppression request.
- Do listings come back after removal?
- Yes, often. Brokers re-ingest public records on a rolling basis, so a listing you removed can reappear weeks or months later when a new record (a move, a new phone number, a court filing) hits their pipeline. That is why ongoing monitoring matters more than a one-time sweep.
- Is it legal for these sites to publish my address?
- In most US states, yes. Public-records data is generally legal to republish, and there is no federal right to be forgotten. California (CCPA/CPRA), Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, and a growing list of states give residents a right to request deletion, and every reputable broker honors those requests regardless of where you live.
- Can I do this myself for free?
- Yes. Every link on this page goes to the site's real opt-out form, and none of them charge to remove you. It is genuinely tedious — expect a few hours for the initial pass and ongoing follow-ups every few months — but it is entirely doable on your own.
